A fascinating day that includes a peak into the history of Hermannsburg Aboriginal Mission, followed by a drive through the 250 million year old Finke River bed to Palm Valley where Red Cabbage Palms abound -reminders of a Tropical rainforest era -a treat for naturalists and photographers. Includes stunning scenery of the West MacDonnell Ranges along the way.
Itinerary:
Emu Run collect you from your Alice Springs accommodation at 7.30am.
Enjoy stunning scenery as we travel along the West MacDonnell Ranges to historic Hermannsburg Mission (home of famous Aboriginal artist Albert Namitjira) where we have morning tea (freshly made Apple Strudel) before exploring the mission’s grounds, pioneer buildings, and aboriginal art gallery which includes Namitjira originals.
Depart Hermannsburg and drive along the ancient Finke Riverbed to amazing Palm Valley famous for the Red Cabbage Palms found growing naturally nowhere else in the world. We take a walk up to Kalaranga Rock lookout and marvel at the natural Amphitheatre and incredible landscape. We travel through Cycad Gorge and enjoy a guided walk along the rim of the valley and a delicious lunch before returning to Alice Springs at Sunset while watching amazing Sunset colour changes of the West MacDonnell ranges.
It’s a journey that you can take in a day, but will transport you into another time and another world
What To Bring
Dress in the Northern Territory is casual and comfortable. Winter nights (May to August) can be cold, so bring warm clothing. Days are sunny and warm. Remember to bring strong, non-slip walking shoes, hats, sunglasses, camera, water bottle & sunscreen.
